Cabbage & Cranberry Salad

Boy, am I glad that winter is over! I think I could not cope with many more cabbages being delivered in my veg box! We've been slowly eating our way through various cabbage-based recipes over the last few months, including but not limited to black bean brussel sprouts, cabbage and bread soup, lemon cabbage stir fry, cole slaw and kale chips. 
My last two boxes contained very vernal lettuce leaves, so hopefully the cabbage glut is about to be over. When we had our first barbecue on Saturday, I tried to convert one of my cabbages into something that was less warming comfort food and had more of a summery taste. This really simple salad is what I came up with.

CABBAGE & CRANBERRY SALAD

(serves 2 as a side)

NEED:

1/4 head of white cabbage, outer leaves removed and shredded finely

1 good handful of dried cranberries

1 lemon, juiced

2 tsp olive oil

salt

black pepper

1 tsp dried parsley (or fresh if you have it) 

DO:

Toss cabbage and cranberries with the lemon juice and olive oil until well covered. Season to taste and add the parsley if using dried. 

Let marinade in the fridge for at least an hour before serving. If you are using fresh parsley, add it just before serving. I know this is not much of a recipe, but I said it was simple!

Die Letzte Kneipe Vor New York

On my last visit home to Germany, I finally got to go to this pub that my parents had been telling me about for years. They discovered it only a while ago, even though it's been in business for like ever. My Opa used to go there as a young man. The name of the pub is Treffpunkt Kaiserhafen or Die Letzte Kneipe Vor New York (The Last Pub Before New York). It's an old sailors' dive in the industrial port of Bremerhaven, which also used to be the final stop for many European emigrants leaving on ocean liners on their way to America. Hence the name.
The pub serves hearty, traditional food, good local beer and spirits, and has entertainment on some evenings: formidable Brunhilde Lüchau sings shanties, hits from past years and one or two recent pop songs, all in German and backed up by the Ocean Band. And if you like, you can share a bit of the spotlight and belt out a tune as well. My family and I stuck to raising our voices at our table, though.
Die Letzte Kneipe Vor New York  is a shrine to seafaring, the walls are covered in maritime memorabilia, there are deep diving suits, fishing nets, old nautical instruments and figureheads. A big fish tank draws your eye to the wall were generations of seamen, sailors, longshoremen and dock workers have signed their names.
I hope you enjoy the photos I took. There was so much to see, and the place felt distinctively like home to me, with all these reminders of the sea that I grew up around.

Home Sweet Home: My Parents' New Pad

The main reason that I went home to Germany ten days ago was to say goodbye to the house I grew up in. My Mama & Papa have sold up and will be moving in April. Their new dwelling is only 3 kilometres away from my childhood home, and after thorough inspection I fully approve, which made the thought of sleeping under the familiar old roof for the final time slightly less sad. 
The parents bought a beautiful 1960s bungalow, with a sunny conservatory, cozy garden, fantastic retro build-in furniture, a coal-fuelled oven in the guest room, and full of artefacts that the previous owners left behind. They are currently replacing the kitchen and old bathroom suite and are doing the whole place up to their taste. They are visibly happy to have found this gem and looking forward to spent their retirement there. I am really happy for them! I cannot wait to go back for the house warming to see what their new home looks like finished. For now, let me take you on a tour of the renovations in progress...
