Our Song (And Dancing With My Papa)

Marco's and my "real" song is If I Had $1,000,000 by the Barenaked Ladies. In fact, the Barenaked Ladies are our band. I think we even talked about the Ladies on the day we first met. However, that song did not really lend itself easily to be our first dance.

We are both also quite fond of 70s and 80s rock. So in the end we chose to dance to Jump! No, not the one by Van Halen. By Paul Anka! Yes! From his excellent album Rock Swings. On which he interprets good old golden rock anthems all swingy, supported by a big band. It's really, really fantastic. If you like rock anthems and swing...

We first heard this version when the BBC used it for a trailer during the Vancouver Winter Olympics at the beginning of 2010 and both liked it. It's maybe more upbeat than your usual first dance, but the lyrics are kinda life-affirming and we had figuratively just jumped into something new and exciting! Paul is Canadian, too, you know. So all good!

I went slightly Bridezilla on my man and tried to teach him to dance just a little bit, but I failed epicly at that. So on the day we just shuffled along with lots of giggles and me uttering the odd "twirl me, twirl me, please!". (I do so love twirling, and my wedding dress loved it too!)

These were really close contenders for first dance songs:

Lost Together - Blue Rodeo
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

I also really felt like hitting the floor with my Papa, and lucky for me, he said yes when I asked him if he would like to have a father-and-daughter dance with me! He said firmly no to practice runs, though, so I did not know what was coming...

I can't remember ever really having danced with my father before the wedding, but the man's got moves! We swung and swayed and there were quite a few twirls, as well. And a dizzy bride after!

He and I boogied to Follow Your Daughter Home by The Guess Who, another great Canadian band.

What about you guys? Do you and your partner have a song? What would you want your first dance to be? Do tell me!

  1. Your dances look so lovely, and the twirling really does show off the dress so nicely!

We're currently deciding between Wonderwall, by Oasis or And Then I Kissed Her by the Beach Boys... I like the latter, as it's short (!) and I get embarrassed when everyone's looking at me, but we might go for the former and get others to join us on the dance floor.

  4. You look amazing and that dress was definetly crying out to be twirled.
I love that you needed to point out that your song wasn't Jump by Van Halen. That would have been so funny.
Ian and I don't have a song, but the 1st song we danced to together (at our engagment party) was Red wine by UB40... that wasn't planned, everyone just vacated the dancefloor. It wouldn't be my song of choice.

  5. Such a lovely bride you made! :)

The first song Colt and I danced to at our wedding was actually three songs—"Hanging by a Moment" by Lifehouse, "Hey There Delilah" by The Plain White Ts and "You are the Best Thing" by Ray LaMontagne. We had a friend mash them together.

And my dance with my dad, we played "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins. :)
