Meet Moses

This is Moses. Also known as Momo, Mosey, Mo-Bear, or Big Guy. The feline formerly known as Garden Cat. He is the latest addition to what you may now legitimately call my cat collection. The other part of which you've met here.

I first noticed Moses in August last year. Looking out of the kitchen window, I'd see a pile of fur rolled up in a little sunspot by our fence. But whenever I stepped outside to investigate, I would see a flurry of black and white disappear into the bushes in the back.

One day, Marco called me out to look at fur-pile, who was not dashing off at first sight of us, as usual. Instead, he stayed in his spot and glanced at us sleepily. Marco was wondering if he was okay, and I decided to put some food out for him, which he wolfed down once we'd cleared the garden.

So then feeding this cat became a daily thing. We soon named him Garden Cat and he even got his own box of kibble, because I felt reluctant to feed my girl cats' expensive dry food to either a) somebody else's opportunistic pet or b) a shaggy stray. Garden Cat was very hungry.

Garden Cat soon also became accustomed with his feedings, and formed an attachment to me. He would still lie in his corner of our flower bed all day every day, but get up to follow me to the spot I'd put the bowl down. Soon I was able to touch him or drag a stick along for him to chase.

We had fed him for several weeks by October. Even though he would go off to somewhere every night, had started to wonder if he didn't have anybody to care for him. He was sweet and ready to be loved after he overcame his initial skepticism, so we found it hard to believe he'd be a stray. But then again, he was skinny and dirty, and would come to our garden every day, even in bad weather. He hadn't been neutered (let's just say that you could clearly see he was a boy). One day I had to remove a tick from his neck, and his teeth were all crooked and broken. I listed him on an online site for lost and found animals and attached a paper collar with my phone number to his neck. Nobody ever got in touch.

In November, he visited for several days with a big neck wound that just got worse and worse and clearly hurt him. At that point I kind of didn't care if he had an owner anymore, because they were obviously not able to look after him right. I lured him in the house and booked an appointment with our vet, who cleaned out the big abscess, tested him for FIV (thankfully he was negative), chopped off his balls, and gave him all the injections he needed. Poor traumatized Moses...

Several months and some enormous vet bills later, Moses is still living with us. He eats like a machine and acts like a giant kitten when you play with him. I have grown fond of his big fluffy face.

Unfortunately, my girl cats are not as keen on him. Even though they are very slowly getting used to his presence, they hiss and show their teeth whenever he comes near them. This is why we are sadly considering giving him away, as my girls' stressed behaviour stresses him out in return. It does not seem fair for them to have to live that way. We want to give it some more time, but are not sure how long we should wait, and if their relationship is ever going to get better. My loyalty also clearly lies with Mae and Missy, and it makes me sad to see them unhappy. But I am still crossing my fingers for a happy ending.

Do you have any experience of taking in a stray cat? Or can you give me any tips on how to make cats love each other? I'd like to hear from you if you have a similar story to share!

What? It's almost February???

Hi People! If you are still here. Seeing as I haven't been... As usual in January, I am in a bit of a blogging slump. Or maybe I'm just feeling slumpy all over. Comes with the post-Christmas come-down, which this year is combined with post-holiday blues. I haven't even picked my word yet, unlike so many other bloggers. Yes, I am indeed still reading blogs. Just the writing is an issue. But the time will come.
By the way, did you enjoy all the fantabulous guest posters that came to visit here in November and December? I need to give them all a BIG thank you for sharing their brilliance with you and me. Just in case you missed any of them, here are the links to their posts:

And even though I have not shown my face around here for a while, let me assure you that I have not been completely idle. Here are a few of the things that I've been up to in the last few weeks:

Spent Christmas at home in Germany.

 Celebrated my Oma's 80th.

Eaten a lot of festive food.

Cooked my first ever Christmas turkey, successfully!

Had drinks at a bar with no name with lovely company (named Christina, Rich & Marco).

Gone for walks.

Made the cats cuddle with me.

Designed and ordered some business cards from Zazzle for when I do pick up blogging again.

Rescued mice when the cats had to reconfirm their wild animal status after too much cuddling.

Cross-stitched a birthday present for a dear friend.

Said goodbye to the sparkly season in style with carols, Glühwein & a bonfire at
the awesome Geffrye Museum.

What about you? Did you have a good change-over? How is your 2013 shaping up so far? Have you big plans? Picked a word? Or are you taken the slow approach like me? In what ever way you are tackling the next 12 months, I hope that they will be happy and joyful and full of fervour. Eventually...

See you soon!

It's Too Darn Hot

I must apologize for still being a bit unreliable with my blogging. It's finally summer in England (let's hope it lasts for more than a week!) and sitting in front of my laptop has not been a priority. I have not quite been tap-dancing around my living room in a bathing suit, but the picture of Mae pretty much conveys what I feel like doing at the moment. Letting the sun warm my bones! I have a book review to write for Forever Free and I could show you progress on my wedding quilt and my sky scarf, so hopefully I will get those things up here soon.

But I must warn you that I also have a Germany vacation planned next week, to go to my parents' housewarming and then to spend some time with friends in Essen and Cologne, so there might not be much posting happening then, either. But I have a feeling I might bring back photos...

To be honest, at the moment I am kinda thinking of giving myself the whole summer off, but I think I would miss you guys too much! So for now, please bear with me while I tend to life.

For something to do, maybe you would like to enter my knitting pattern giveaway?

I Heart The Cookie Monster

He's like a soul mate to me!

{via}

I'm having a lovely time being on my week's vacation at home, just me and the cats. I've been reading (The Hunger Games, finally! I'm already on book two!), having nice breakfasts, answering long overdue emails, amusing the cats with pieces of string, displeasing the cats by snatching a starling away from them, and have also done several loads of laundry (which means ironing later in the week, bleargh). As expected, I've been taking a nap a day, too!

The weather has been crazy, especially today, with hail and thunderstorms, so it's nice that I can just go to the kitchen and make myself a cup of tea to dunk a cookie in instead of having to battle for space on the underground with other wet commuters. I hope I win the lottery soon, so that this can become my regular lifestyle!

Good Mail Day

Hi Folks.

I hope you had a good weekend. We had some lovely sunshine here in London and a not so lovely rodent rescue operation: Missy brought a little grey mouse home on Sunday. It was still alive and I saw no blood, so I tried to take mouse away from cat.

She was very possessive over it (the claws came out and cats can apparently hiss even when their face is stuffed with furry things), but I won in the end and the mouse scurried away, hopefully without any internal bleeding or psychological trauma. (I am pretty sure I would need counselling if a giant cat dangled me from her mouth, closing her teeth around my head...)

And on a completely different note: don't you just love to come home to exciting mail? Amongst the pile of bank statements and junk mail that I had to go through after coming home from vacation was a little envelope containing this cute hairband. Made and sent by crochet-and-craft-wizard JenMun(a)! I won it in a giveaway that she was hosting. Yay!

Thanks for my gorgeous new accessory!

Have a fantastic week everybody!

UPDATE:

Sad mouse news. When I let Mae in last night, she brought a dead mouse with her. :o( I am not sure if it was the same one from the afternoon and it was injured after all, or if Mae caught a new one. Darn cats! They are such trophy hunters!

Guess Who...

... is suffering from Chronic Bitchface?

MISSY!

While Mae usually greets me with shiny round excited eyes and somewhat of a smile on her face, Missy habitually looks like this:

I know she can't help it, I have the same condition!

The Cats

Let me introduce you to the cats. They can be quite demanding and naughty. They need a lot of care and attention. But we still love them! Except when they come to sit on our chests and breathe down our faces at 4 AM...

This is Mae. She was our first. She is a beautiful tortoiseshell, black and white and red all over... With four cute little white mitten paws. Marco came up with her name because she was very flirty and easy to give us love when we first met her, so she reminded him of Mae West. Mae enjoys hunting for moths, running, fruit cake, belly rubs, and string. Mae does not enjoy being stalked by Missy, raw meat, and cat bullies.

This is Missy. She came second, but thinks she is number one. She is mostly black with a few reddish tortoiseshell speckles, three white whiskers, and a funky raccoon tail. Her name suits her because she can be something of a little misfit. Missy enjoys water, sleeping on the laptop keyboard, meeting other cats, feathery toys, and purring. Missy does not enjoy having nobody to play with, being told off, and us sleeping in.

Both of them are rescue cats that were looked after by Cats Protection before they moved in with us. Mae was a kitten when she was first rescued, then went to live with somebody who developed an allergy to her. Good for us, but poor Mae! Missy had had a loving owner, but was put into shelter when the lady became pregnant and her boyfriend did no longer want a cat in the house. It must have been hard to give her up!

Completely unrelated to the above, I today complimented a post officer on how methodical he was in stamping and signing several proof-of-postage slips for parcels I was sending. Geek!
